Geetanjali Kulkarni Biography
Geetanjali Kulkarni is an Indian film and theatre actor known for her work in Marathi and Hindi cinema and for contributions to theatre education and youth
Early life and backgroundGeetanjali Kulkarni grew up with a strong attraction to acting and theatre. She completed a BA from Ruia College in Mumbai and later earned a scholarship to study acting at the National School of Drama in Delhi. Her years at NSD were a formative period: she has described the training and daily discipline of the school as transformative, shaping both her craft and the way she approaches performance.
Career
Kulkarni began her professional life in experimental Marathi theatre before moving into film. Her screen debut came in the Marathi feature Court (2014), in which she played the role of Nutan. Since then she has appeared in a range of Marathi and Hindi films, including P Se PM Tak (2015) where she portrayed Anandibai, and Photograph (2019) in the role of Rampyaari. She is also known for her work in the web series Gullak (2019), appearing as the character Mummy, Shanti Mishra.
Her stage work includes directing and acting in plays, and one of her theatre productions, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night titled Piya Behrupiya, was presented at the Globe to Globe festival at the Globe Theatre in London. Throughout her career she has favoured projects that allow her to explore experimental and professional theatre rather than commercial advertising work.
Public profile
Kulkarni has received several recognitions tied to projects she has been involved with. Court received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film at the 62nd National Film Awards. Her performances and theatre contributions have also been honoured with awards such as a Filmfare Critics Award in Marathi, Zee awards for Ek Rikaami Baaju, the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award, and the Vinod Doshi Fellowship from Sahitya Pratishthan for young theatre artists in 2011–2012, among other acknowledgements.
Outside performance, Kulkarni is active in theatre education and community outreach. She founded a drama school in Mumbai and leads workshops in acting. She has been involved with Quest, an organisation co-run by her husband, through which she participates in programmes to improve educational experiences for children. Under the Goshtarang initiative launched by the Quality Education Support Trust (QUEST) in 2016, she has directed plays and helped build a fellowship that trains local actors to perform for schoolchildren, seeking to expand children’s exposure to stories beyond textbook material.
Personal life
Geetanjali Kulkarni is married to actor Atul Kulkarni; the couple met while studying at the National School of Drama and married in December 1996. They have chosen not to have children. The pair maintain a modest lifestyle and are both involved in educational and social initiatives through their NGO work.

In recent years Kulkarni has continued to balance screen roles with theatre direction and education projects. Her film and series work through 2019 includes roles in Photograph and Gullak, and she remains active with Goshtarang and other Quest initiatives that tour schools and develop local performance fellowships for children and young audiences.
