Early life and background

Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab Province, Pakistan, in 1968. Raised in a family with ties to the city, he is the son of Syed Sarwar Munir Shah, who served as principal of FG Technical High School in Lalkurti, Rawalpindi. Munir is identified with the Syed caste and practices Islam. He has academic credentials from the National Defence University in Islamabad, holding an MPhil in Public Policy and Strategic Security Management.

Career

Asim Munir began his military career after joining the 17th Officers Training Course at the Officers Training School (OTS) in Mangla. He completed his training in 1986 and was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. Early postings included roles as a brigade major and as a General Staff Officer-II within infantry formations, and he later commanded his parent unit after promotion to colonel.

Munir’s staff and command résumé expanded over decades. He served as Force Commander of the Northern Areas (FCNA) as a major general, and after that tenure he was appointed Director-General of Military Intelligence (DGMI) in December 2016, holding that post until October 2018. He was promoted to lieutenant general on 28 September 2018 and soon after took charge as Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in October 2018, a post he held until June 2019. Following his ISI tenure, Munir assumed command of the Gujranwala-based XXX Corps as General Officer Commanding from 17 June 2019 until October 2021.

After corps command, he was posted at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi as Quartermaster General (QMG). On 29 November 2022 he was appointed the 11th Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan. His appointment had been approved by the President of Pakistan on 24 November 2022, and his retirement date had previously been deferred while he was considered among contenders for the army chief’s post.

In May 2025, Munir was promoted to the rank of field marshal, making him the second Pakistani army chief to receive that title. Throughout his service he has attended a range of professional courses at military institutions, including the Command and Staff College in Quetta, the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College in Kuala Lumpur, the National Defence University in Islamabad, and Japan’s JGSDF Fuji School. He has also held staff roles such as Chief of Staff of Mangla Corps and positions within the CGS Secretariat and as directing staff at the Command and Staff College.

Munir’s operational experience includes participation in counter-insurgency operations in Balochistan and north-west Pakistan, as well as involvement in the nationwide counter-terrorism effort Radd-ul-Fasaad.

Awards and recognition

Over his career Munir has received a number of military honours. Early in his career he earned the Sword of Honour at OTS, Mangla, and an instructor’s medal from the Command and Staff College in Quetta. Civilian and military medals conferred by the state over the years include service medals marking decades of service and several commemorative and operational medals. In March 2018 he was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), one of Pakistan’s senior peacetime military awards.

Munir is married to Syeda Irum Asim and is a father of three children. He lists reading and travelling among his interests. He also undertook Islamic studies under the guidance of the late preacher Hafiz Khalil Ahmed.
