General JJ Singh Biography
Joginder Jaswant Singh is a retired Indian Army general who served from 1964 to 2007, culminating in his appointment as Chief of Army Staff. Born in 1945,他
Early life and backgroundJoginder Jaswant Singh was born on 17 September 1945 in Samma Satta, then part of the princely state of Bahawalpur (now in Pakistan). His family moved to Patiala after the 1947 partition. He comes from a military family: his father, Jaswant Singh Marwah, served as a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army and his grandfather enlisted in the British Indian Army during the First World War.
Singh spent his childhood moving across northern India due to his father’s postings and completed schooling in Catholic convent schools in places including Secunderabad and Jammu. He joined the National Defence Academy as part of the 25th course in January 1961. The course was shortened during the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict, and he was commissioned into the Indian Army on 2 August 1964, joining the 9 Maratha Light Infantry.
Career
Over a military career that spanned more than four decades, Singh served in a variety of operational and command appointments. He rose through infantry and mountain formation commands, including service with the 5 and 9 Maratha Light Infantry, leadership of the 79th (Independent) Mountain Brigade, the 9th Infantry Division, and I Corps. He later commanded the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) and the Western Army.
His operational experience included deployment in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War and participation in the Kargil conflict. He served in several sensitive and varied postings across the country, including Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Joshimath in what is now Uttarakhand.
Singh received multiple military decorations over his service: the Vishisht Seva Medal, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. In 1991–92 he was wounded during a terrorist infiltration and received the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation for that action.
On 1 February 2005 he reached the apex of his professional career when he was appointed Chief of Army Staff. He retired from service on 30 September 2007, bringing to a close more than 43 years in uniform.
Public profile
Beyond his operational and command record, Singh developed a public profile through awards and activities after his retirement. He received recognition such as the Sikh of the Year Award from the UK Sikh Forum in 2007, the Punjabi Ratan Award from the World Punjabi Organization in 2009, and in 2016 he was decorated with the Legion of Honour by the French government.
Singh has also been visible in public life through an interest in politics. He contested the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Patiala Urban seat as a candidate of the Shiromani Akali Dal and later stood in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib after joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali). On 18 January 2022 he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Punjab assembly elections.
Personal life
Singh is married to Anupama Singh and is a father to one son and one daughter. He identifies with Sikhism and lists sports as longstanding pastimes — basketball, squash and golf are noted among his favourites. He is also a keen mountaineer and received training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling.
Physical details recorded during his public life list him at about 170 cm (5'7") in height and around 78 kg (172 lbs) in weight, with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.
