Early life and background
Gerald William Coetzee was born on 2 October 2000 in Bloemfontein, in South Africa’s Free State province. Raised in a sporting household, he developed his skills playing backyard sports with his older brother and came through school cricket at Grey College Primary and Saint Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein. He completed his schooling with matriculation at Saint Andrew’s School and progressed quickly through provincial age-group teams in Free State before earning national age-group recognition.

Career
Coetzee established himself as a fast-bowling allrounder who bowls right-arm fast and bats right-handed. His early representative career included Free State age-grade sides, South African Colts and multiple appearances for South Africa Under-19s. He featured in the 2018 and 2020 Under-19 World Cups and recorded useful contributions with both ball and bat at youth level.

Domestically he played for Free State and the Knights, and his performances in franchise competitions led to opportunities in T20 tournaments. He appeared for Jozi Stars in the Mzansi Super League, was part of the inaugural SA20 tournament for Joburg Super Kings where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets in nine matches, and joined the Texas Super Kings for Major League Cricket.
