Early life and backgroundGhanshyam Nayak was born on 12 May 1944 in the village of Undhai in Gujarat. He came from a family with theatrical roots; both his father and grandfather were involved in theatre, a tradition that influenced his own lifelong involvement in stage and screen. Later in life his hometown was Mumbai, where he lived and worked for many decades.
Career
Nayak’s onscreen career began when he was still a child. In the late 1950s he appeared in a popular film song as a child artist and followed that with a role in the 1960 film Masoom. Over more than five decades he built a diverse body of work across Hindi and Gujarati films, television and theatre.
He worked as a supporting actor in Bollywood, took part in Gujarati cinema, and remained active in theatre throughout his life. Nayak also contributed as a playback singer in Gujarati films and performed dubbing work in hundreds of Gujarati films, including voice work for established actors in select Hindi and regional films.
On television he appeared in a wide range of shows in character and supporting parts. Credits mentioned during his career include appearances in Khichdi, Philips Top 10, Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Dill Mill Gaye, Sarathi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and others. On 3 October 2021 he died in Mumbai at the age of 77. His passing drew condolences from public figures and regional leaders who noted the loss to Gujarati theatre and Indian television.
