Rupinder Singh Grewal, known professionally as Gippy Grewal, was born on 2 January 1983 in Koom Kalan, Ludhiana, Punjab. Raised in a middle-class family, he attended Nankana Sahib Public School in Kot Gangu Rai and later studied at the North India Institute of Hotel Management in Panchkula, where he earned a degree in hotel management. His parents are Santokh Singh (late) and Kulwant Kaur, and he has a brother, Sippy Grewal, who works as a film producer. Grewal follows Sikhism and lists Chandigarh as his hometown.

Career
Gippy Grewal began his public career as a singer. His recorded debut came in 2002 with the song "Chakk Ley" featuring Jagdev Maan. He built a catalogue of popular Punjabi tracks that includes titles such as "Angreji Beat," "Hello Hello," "Oscar," "Desi Gana," "Bad Baby," "Pind Nanke," "Channa," "Massi," and "Dubai Wale Shaikh." Several of his songs have roots in quick, informal creative sessions; for example, "Angreji Beat" originated during a two-hour session in a cafe in Canada.

Transitioning into film, Grewal made his Punjabi film debut with Mel Karade Rabba in 2010.
