Early life and backgroundGirish Raghunath Karnad was born on 19 May 1938 in the Bombay Presidency of British India. He was raised in Karnataka and belonged to a Saraswat Konkani family. Karnad completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics and statistics and went on to earn a Master of Arts in philosophy, political science and economics. He also completed a Ph.D. He studied at Karnatak Arts College in Dharwad and later attended Magdalen College at the University of Oxford.
Career
Karnad began his creative career in 1960 with the play Maa Nishaadha and rose to prominence as a playwright in Kannada. His play Tughlaq brought him wide attention in 1964. He wrote plays in Kannada that were subsequently translated into English and other Indian languages, establishing him as a leading voice in modern Indian theatre.
His work extended into cinema and television. Karnad contributed screenplays and acted in films, with his screenwriting debut linked to the celebrated Kannada film Samskara (1970). He co-directed Vamsha Vriksha (1971) and made his directorial debut that year. On television, his performance as the Swami’s father in the 1987 series Malgudi Days was widely recognized by Indian audiences.
Karnad held academic and institutional posts alongside his creative work. From 1963 to 1970 he worked with Oxford University Press in Chennai and also served as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago from 1987 to 1988. He served as director of the Film and Television Institute of India from 1974 to 1975 and was chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi from 1988 to 1993.
