Girish Maruti Ernak was born on 12 December 1990 in Kalyan, District Thane, Maharashtra. Raised in the same town he calls home, Girish discovered athletics at a young age and balanced school sports with formal training at a local sports club in Kalyan. His early interest included cricket, but a physical training teacher noticed his aptitude for kabaddi and steered him toward the sport.

Girish keeps an active lifestyle off the mat as well; his hobbies include gymming and travelling. He has several tattoos, including an armband on his right forearm that reads "Kabaddi" in Hindi alongside his jersey number 8, a lion tattoo on his left forearm that incorporates his daughter's name and birth time, patterning on his left bicep, and an "Om" symbol on his right bicep.

Girish began training in kabaddi in 2005 and progressed from local competition to represent teams with wider recognition. In 2016 he moved to Bengal Warriors for seasons three and four. Returning to the Pro Kabaddi League, Girish was picked by Gujarat Giants for season eight in 2021.
