Girish Thapar was born on 15 June 1974 in Kanker Khera, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in Meerut and attended Sanatan Dharm Inter College. His father, Balraj Thapar, worked as a theatre artist, and Girish’s early exposure to stagecraft influenced his decision to pursue performing. In 1987 he and friends formed an organization called Natrang and began staging street and theatre plays.

Thapar began his professional journey in entertainment after leaving a teaching job to follow his passion for acting. He moved to Mumbai in 1997 to pursue opportunities in film and television, returning to the city permanently in 2012 after an earlier spell away due to limited work. His screen debut is listed as the film Bharat Bhagya Vidhata (2002), in which he played a police havaldar, and his early television work included the serial Aasmaan Ki Aur on Doordarshan.
