Gita Gopinath was born on 8 December 1971 in Kolkata, India, and spent part of her childhood in Mysuru, Karnataka. Her father, T. V. Gopinath, has been involved with agricultural producer organizations, and her mother ran a playschool for many years. Gopinath attended Nirmala Convent School in Mysore and later studied at Mahajana PU College before switching from science to economics at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, where she completed a BA (Hons) in economics and topped her class across all three years.

She continued her studies at the Delhi School of Economics and later moved to the United States for graduate education. Gopinath earned an MA in economics from the University of Washington and completed a PhD in economics at Princeton University.

Career

Gopinath built a career that bridges top-tier academic research and international economic policy. After completing her doctorate at Princeton, she held an assistant professorship at the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business. In 2005 she joined Harvard University, where she became the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics and later earned tenure. Her academic work has focused on international finance and macroeconomics, producing research on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and issues affecting emerging markets.

Beyond academia, Gopinath has held a number of influential advisory and research roles. She has served as co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the National Bureau of Economic Research and was a member of the economic advisory panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She has been a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and served as an economic adviser to the chief minister of Kerala. In 2018 she was a member of the Eminent Person Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for India’s Ministry of Finance.

Gopinath joined the International Monetary Fund, where she served as Chief Economist and later became the institution’s Deputy Managing Director. She is the first Indian-American woman to hold that Deputy Managing Director role in the Fund’s history. Throughout her career she has also held editorial and advisory responsibilities and supervised student research, experiences she has said prepared her for the multitasking demands of policy work.

Gopinath’s research and public service have been recognized with multiple awards. Early in her career she received the Bhagwati Prize for the best paper in the Journal of International Economics. Princeton awarded her a Woodrow Wilson fellowship for doctoral research.
