Early life and background

Gita Mehta was born in Delhi in 1943 into an Odia family. She spent part of her childhood in boarding school and later studied at Girton College, University of Cambridge. Her parents were Bijayananda Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik. Mehta’s upbringing and family connections — including two brothers, one of whom is Naveen Patnaik — shaped an early awareness of public life and the wider world.

Career

Mehta built a career across writing, journalism and film. She worked as a reporter for the American television network NBC around 1970–1971 and covered events in India, including reporting on the 1971 Bangladesh war. Her documentary work included writing and directing Dateline Bangladesh in 1972, a film that drew on her coverage of the conflict and was shown in theatres in India and elsewhere.

As an author she published several books that presented Indian life and culture to Western readers. Her first book, Karma Cola (1979), examined Western seekers who travelled to India in search of spiritual experiences. She later published the novel Raj (1989), and the short-story collection A River Sutra (1993), which interweaves mythology and tales of love around the banks of India’s sacred river. Snakes and Ladders (1997) gathered essays on India and was released on the country’s 50th Independence Day. Her books were translated into multiple languages and found readerships in Europe, the United States and India.

Mehta married Ajai Singh Mehta (known as Sonny Mehta) in December 1965. The couple lived in New York after their marriage and later moved to London in 1987. Sonny Mehta was a prominent figure in publishing, serving as editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf and later as chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group; he predeceased her in 2019. Gita and Ajai had a son, Aditya Singh Mehta.

Her work earned recognition in publishing; she received a lifetime achievement award for her books published in India, the United Kingdom and the United States. Mehta also worked on documentaries for British, European and American television outlets and is remembered for bringing contemporary Indian stories to international audiences.

In 2019 she declined the Padma Shri award from the Government of India, explaining that the timing of the honour, coming just before a general election, could be misconstrued and cause embarrassment.

Later life and death

Gita Mehta held American nationality and maintained ties to India throughout her life. She died in Delhi on 16 September 2023 at the age of 80; her death was attributed to old-age ailments.
