Early life and background

He completed his schooling at Sacred Heart College in Auckland, finishing in 2014. Sporting from a young age, he represented his school across multiple age-group teams and played hockey, rugby and cricket during his youth.

Career

Phillips is a right-handed batter and an off-break bowler who has featured for New Zealand in all three international formats. He made his Twenty20 international debut on 17 February 2017 against South Africa at Eden Park, Auckland. His Test debut came on 3 January 2020 at the Sydney Cricket Ground against Australia, and he recorded a half-century in his first Test innings. Phillips’ One Day International debut followed on 10 July 2022 against Ireland in Dublin.

At domestic level he has represented Auckland and later moved to Otago ahead of the 2022–23 season. He has also played for a number of franchise sides around the world, including Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, Welsh Fire in The Hundred, and Gloucestershire in England. Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him at the 2022 IPL auction.

Phillips first attracted widespread attention for his big-hitting in the shortest format. He scored his maiden T20I century on 29 November 2020 against the West Indies, a 108 off 51 balls that stood as the fastest T20I century by a New Zealand player at the time. He added a second T20I century during a group-stage match against Sri Lanka at the 2022 T20 World Cup, an innings of 104 from 64 deliveries. Phillips has been effective in franchise cricket as well, including a notable late-innings burst for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2023 IPL that helped his team to victory.

He has also compiled milestones across formats: in domestic and international cricket he became one of the few New Zealand players to reach centuries in all three formats. In international tournaments he played every match for New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup and was part of the squad for subsequent ICC events.
