Goga Kapoor Biography

Goga Kapoor, born Ravinder Kapoor, was a veteran Indian actor best known for his villainous film roles and his portrayal of Kansa in the 1988 TV epic Mahap

Early life and background

Ravinder Kapoor, who became widely known by his screen name Goga Kapoor, was born on 15 December 1940 in Gujranwala, Punjab, then part of British India (now in Pakistan). His family experienced the upheaval of partition and relocated to India. Raised in a household that later settled in New Delhi, he originally planned to follow in his father’s footsteps in the textile trade, but an early interest in performance led him in a different direction.

Goga developed his acting foundation in theatre, performing English plays before transitioning to film. Those stage experiences helped shape the distinctive delivery and presence that would mark his later screen work.

Career

Goga Kapoor made his film debut in 1971 with Jwala. Not long after, he took on a villainous role in Ek Kunwari Ek Kunwara (1973), and that portrayal set the course for much of his screen career. He became one of Hindi cinema’s recognisable character villains, taking on menacing and memorable parts across a long span of films.

Among the notable movies in which he appeared are Toofan, Agneepath, and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. He frequently shared the screen with Amitabh Bachchan; their on-screen pairing as hero and antagonist became a familiar and popular combination for audiences of the time. Offscreen, the two were reported to have been on friendly terms.

On television, Goga reached a new level of visibility with his portrayal of Kansa in the 1988 television adaptation of the Mahabharat epic. That role became one of his most recognised performances and contributed to his lasting association with the character.

Goga continued to act for several decades. His final film appearance was in Darwaza Bandh Rakho (2006), capping a career that began in the early 1970s and included numerous supporting and character roles.

Public profile

Goga Kapoor was known for a distinctive style of dialogue delivery that made his negative characters stand out. He maintained an active presence within the film community as a committee member of the Cine Artistes Association, taking part in professional and industry affairs beyond his screen work.

Personal life

Goga Kapoor was married to Shanta Kapoor and was the father of daughters Shailly Kapoor Anand and Payal Goga Kapoor (who is also an actress) and another daughter, Sonu Kapoor. He was Hindu by religion, enjoyed cooking, traveling, and reading, and preferred non-vegetarian food. His favourite actor was Raj Kapoor and he listed Jagte Raho (1956) as a favourite film. Physically, he stood about 178 cm (5'10") tall and weighed around 80 kg.

Later years and death

After a long career in film and television, Goga Kapoor died in Mumbai on 3 March 2011 following a prolonged illness. He was 71 years old at the time of his passing.

Latest updates
