Early life and backgroundGovind Singh Dotasra was born on 1 October 1964 in Kripa Ram Ji Ki Dhani village in Lachhmangarh tehsil of Sikar district, Rajasthan. He grew up in Sikar and completed his higher education at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Laws in 1988. After completing his studies he practised law for nearly two decades before moving full time into politics.
Career
Dotasra’s formal engagement with politics began in 1981 through the student wing of the Indian National Congress. He joined the Congress party that year and has been associated with it since.
At the local level he served as Pradhan of the Laxmangarh Panchayat Samiti in 2005. He first won election to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Lachhmangarh in 2008 and retained the seat in the 2013 and 2018 state elections, building a record as a three-term MLA from the constituency.
Within the party and legislative structures, Dotasra has held several responsibilities. He led the District Congress Committee in Sikar between July 2011 and May 2018. In 2013 he was appointed Chief Whip of the Congress Legislative Party in Rajasthan. He served as Vice President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee from December 2014 until July 2020. From 2014 through 2016 he was a member of standing committees in the state assembly, including the Committee on Estimates “A” and the Committee on Public Accounts.
Following the 2018 state election, Dotasra joined the state government as Minister of State with independent charge for Primary and Secondary Education, as well as Tourism and Devasthan, a portfolio he held from 28 December 2018 until his resignation on 20 November 2021. In July 2020 he was appointed President of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee.
Among policy initiatives and public measures during his ministerial tenure was a 2019 proposal to reassign male teachers under 50 from designated girls’ schools, a move reported as controversial and criticized by some education observers. In recognition of his work on educational matters during the COVID-19 pandemic, he received the World Education Leader of the Year Award at the 19th World Education Summit and Awards in 2021. Earlier, a special committee of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly acknowledged him as best parliamentarian in 2016.
