Gukesh trained under coach Vishnu Prasanna and moved quickly through junior ranks. He earned the title of International Master in March 2018 at the Cappelle-la-Grande Open and reached the grandmaster title in March 2019, becoming at the time one of the youngest players in history to do so.
By August 2022 his FIDE rating was recorded as 2699. His tournament success kept accelerating: he won the Gelfand Challenge in the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour in June 2021, claimed an individual gold at the Chess Olympiad in 2022, and in 2024 won both the Gaprindashvili Trophy and an individual gold medal at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest.
