Early life and backgroundGulshan Grover was born on 21 September 1955 in New Delhi, India. He grew up in a family that relocated from Rawalpindi to Delhi after India’s independence. Grover attended a government school in Delhi and later studied at Shri Ram College of Commerce, where he completed postgraduate studies in commerce. From an early age he showed an interest in acting and took formal training at the Actor’s Studio, where peers included Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Mazhar Khan. He went on to teach at the same studio.
Career
Grover made his film debut in 1980 with Hum Paanch. Over the years he built a reputation for playing antagonistic characters, a body of work that earned him the sobriquet “Bad Man” after his role as Kesariya Vilayati in Ram Lakhan. He has worked across a range of industries beyond Bollywood, appearing in films from Iran, Malaysia and Canada, and in 1997 became one of the first Indian actors to appear in a Hollywood production with The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli & Baloo.
His career has also included small-screen opportunities and international projects. He was reportedly considered for the role of a police inspector in Slumdog Millionaire, and he was offered the character Farhad Hassan in the final season of the TV series 24. Grover has appeared in music videos as well, including Sajjad Ali’s “Sohni Lagdi” and Yo Yo Honey Singh’s “Desi Kalakaar.”
Grover’s stage experience in groups such as the Little Theatre Group proved formative; he has said he did not take acting seriously until his work in theatre. He married Filomina Grover in 1998; the marriage ended in divorce in 2001. He subsequently married Kashish Grover in 2001 and that marriage also ended in 2002. He has a son named Sanjay Grover.
Outside of acting, Grover’s interests include working out and swimming. He has shared appreciation for cinema and has named Mughal-E-Azam as a favourite film and actors such as Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala among his favourites.
