Early life and backgroundGundappa Rangnath Viswanath was born on 12 February 1949 in Bhadravathi, then part of Mysore State (present-day Shivamogga, Karnataka). His family moved to Bangalore when he was five. He attended Visweswarapuram Middle School and Fort High School in Bengaluru. Viswanath grew up watching his elder brother and neighbours play club cricket, and those early exposures helped shape his interest in the game despite concerns about his short stature.
Viswanath’s cricket journey began at club level with the Spartan Sports Club in the Mysore Cricket League. A local cricket promoter recognized his batting at a high school ground and encouraged him to join Spartans. He soon became a regular in that side and progressed through the domestic ranks.
Career
Viswanath made an immediate impact in first-class cricket. He debuted in the Ranji Trophy for Mysore in 1967 and produced a commanding innings, scoring an unbeaten double century on the opening day and finishing with a then-record 230 for the competition. That performance and other notable first-class displays led to his inclusion in representative sides and, shortly thereafter, the national team.
He made his Test debut for India on 15 November 1969 against Australia at Kanpur. In that debut match he experienced both extremes — dismissed for a duck in one innings and then compiling a century in the other. That early test century helped establish his reputation for composed strokeplay and timing rather than brute force. Viswanath’s international ODI debut came on 3 April 1974 against England in Leeds.
A right-handed batter who also bowled right-arm leg break on occasion, Viswanath was noted for his elegant wrist work and a preference for timing over power. His favourite shot was the late cut. Over a long international career he became known for playing with a gentle presence on the field and for his ability to handle fast bowling.
Among his career highlights are several unique and significant achievements: scoring a century on Test debut as well as a double century on first-class debut; being one of only a small number of players to combine a century and a duck in the same Test debut; topping the ICC batting rankings in February 1975; and compiling the most Test runs by an Indian at the number four position after Sachin Tendulkar at the time of the cited records. He was also part of the Indian side that recorded its first Test victory in England in 1971.
Some of Viswanath’s most memorable innings came against strong opposition. He scored 113 against England in Mumbai in 1973, an innings so admired by the visiting captain that it drew an unusual show of appreciation. In January 1975 he played a celebrated match in Madras, finishing unbeaten on 97 in an innings rated highly by cricket historians and helping India to a comprehensive victory. In April 1976 he compiled 112 at Port of Spain as India successfully chased a then-imposing target.
Viswanath’s run of consistency included a streak of six consecutive Test fifties, a milestone matched by only a few Indian batters. He was also among the players who remained ever-present in Test sides across long stretches, recording one of the highest counts of consecutive Test appearances for India.
