Gursimran Singh Sidhu, known professionally as Gur Sidhu, was born on 11 July 1997 in the village of Chak Fateh Singh Wala in Bathinda, Punjab. Raised in a musical family, his father Sukhbir Singh Sidhu is a singer and his maternal grandfather, Harnek Singh, worked as a government Punjabi teacher with an interest in music — an influence that encouraged Sidhu’s early involvement with song and instruments. As a student he sang in the school choir and played the harmonium.

After completing his 12th standard in India, Sidhu moved to Canada at age 19 to continue his studies. In the early days after relocation he worked briefly at a plastic factory before focusing on music and building his career in the Punjabi music scene.
