Early life and background

Gurdas Maan was born on 4 January 1957 in Giddarbaha, District Muktsar, Punjab, India. Raised in the same town he later lists as his hometown, Maan attended Yadavindra Public School in Patiala and continued his education at a college in Malout. He also completed a diploma course in sports coaching at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala. As a youth he was active in athletics, winning a bronze medal at the National Wrestling Championship and earning a black belt in judo.

Career

Maan began his professional music journey in the early 1980s. A TV recording of his song "Dil Da Mamala Hai" was aired on 31 December 1980 and helped establish him as a performer. His first album, Chakkar, and his debut film, Mamla Gadbad Hai, were both released in 1984. Over the decades he has worked as a singer, songwriter, choreographer and actor, producing more than 34 albums and writing over 305 songs.

His body of work includes notable songs that have earned critical and popular recognition. The track "Apna Punjab Hove" won him awards at the Asian Pop and Media Award in Birmingham in 1998, and the album Boot Polishan brought him the Best International Album award at the UK Asian Music Awards in 2009. In 2005 he received a National Film Award (Jury's Award) presented by the President of India, and he was also honoured with an honorary doctorate by the University of Wolverhampton in 2010 for his contribution to Punjabi music, art and culture.

Maan has also worked in film and television. He made a special appearance in the Bollywood film Veer-Zaara and has written and directed a TV show called POP Time for Doordarshan, Delhi. His music collaborations have included a Coke Studio performance in 2015 of the song "Ki Banu Duniya Da" with Diljit Dosanjh.
