Early life and background

Gurpreet Singh Waraich was born on 19 July 1971 in Khokhar Faujian, a village in Gurdaspur district, Punjab. His family moved to Jalandhar before his birth where they set up a business, and Ghuggi grew up in that city. He completed his schooling in Jalandhar and later enrolled at Doaba College, Jalandhar, an institution affiliated with Guru Nanak Dev University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. During college he received a full freeship in recognition of his circumstances and talent.

Ghuggi began working as a teenager to support his family. Around age 15 he took a daily-wage clerk job near Kartarpur Sahib Tehsil, writing Bayana agreements and handing over his modest earnings to his father during a period of financial difficulty. He balanced long days at work with drama classes at Apeejay College of Fine Arts and evening rehearsals with a local theatre group he helped form, often returning home late at night and continuing the cycle until he completed his higher secondary studies through open school.

Career

Ghuggi’s stage work and college performances brought early recognition. In 1991 he won the Best Actor award at the GNDU Youth Festival, which helped him secure roles in theatrical productions and local television. His first TV play was Champion on DD Punjabi in the early 1990s, where he portrayed a Sikh athlete. He later featured in the comedy series Raunak Mela, a turning point that led him to focus on comic roles after guidance from fellow performer Balwinder Bicky, who also coined the stage name Ghuggi.

Over more than three decades Ghuggi established himself in Punjabi entertainment, performing in theatre, television and film. His Punjabi film debut came with Jee Aya Nu (2004), and he has appeared in notable Punjabi titles including Yaran Naal Baharan (2005) and Carry On Jatta (2012). He also acted in several Hindi films, with credits such as Apne (2007) and Singh Is Kinng (2008). On television he was seen in series like Ghuggi Khol Pitari and Ghuggi Junction (2003), and he gained a wider national audience as a contestant on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge.

In 2020 Ghuggi launched a talk show titled Hasdeyaan De Ghar Vasde, which premiered on Zee Punjabi and the Zee5 streaming platform and featured well-known guests.

Politics

Ghuggi entered politics in February 2016 when he joined the Aam Aadmi Party. Within months he was named convenor of the party’s Punjab unit in September 2016. He served in that role until May 2017, when he resigned his primary membership after being replaced as state convenor.
