Nirmal Singhji Maharaj was born on 7 July 1952 in Dugri village, Malerkotla, in the Sangrur district of Punjab. He completed his early schooling at the government primary school in Dugri. His parents were Shri Mast Ramji, a farmer, and Smt. Surjit Kaur. He had at least three siblings: one elder brother, one younger brother, and a younger sister named Krishna.

After finishing formal education to satisfy his father's wishes, he went on to earn master's degrees in economics and political science. Following his studies he left home and travelled to several cities including Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Delhi and Mumbai before establishing a base that would later become central to his work as a spiritual teacher.

Known publicly as Guru Ji Chattarpur Wale, Nirmal Singhji Maharaj was a spiritual leader who preferred a direct, practice-oriented approach to spiritual life.
