Guru Somasundaram Biography
Indian actor Guru Somasundaram rose from theatre roots to prominent roles in Tamil and Malayalam cinema. He earned acclaim for his debut in Aaranya Kaandam
Early life and backgroundGuru Somasundaram was born on 3 September 1975 in Tamil Nadu, India. Raised in the state where he would later build his career, he developed an interest in acting and drama from a young age. He attended B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology in Tamil Nadu.
Career
Guru’s formal journey into performance intensified when he joined the well-known Tamil theatre group Koothu-P-Pattarai in 2002. While working with that company he was noticed by director Thiagarajan Kumararaja during a stage production, an encounter that led to his film debut.
His first film role came in the neo-noir Aaranya Kaandam (2011), in which he played Kaalaiyan. To inhabit the character, Guru made significant physical and behavioral changes, adjusting weight, hairstyle, facial hair and mannerisms. The performance brought him early critical recognition and helped establish him in the film world.
After Aaranya Kaandam, Guru moved into a range of supporting and character roles across Tamil and Malayalam projects. He appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Kadal (2013) in a brief but memorable part, and featured in the Malayalam anthology 5 Sundarikal. He later worked on films such as Pandiya Naadu, Jigarthanda, 49-O, Bench Talkies – The First Bench, Thoongaa Vanam, and Kohinoor. His role in Jigarthanda earned him a Vijay Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2013.
Guru left Koothu-P-Pattarai in 2013 to focus on freelance theatre work and expand his presence in cinema. A major turning point came with the political satire Joker, directed by Raju Murugan. In Joker he played the lead character Mannar Mannan and the film’s themes around rural sanitation brought wider attention to his work. The film won two awards at the 64th National Film Awards, and Guru received the Behindwoods Gold Medal for Best Actor in 2017 for his performance.
Following Joker, trailers for his projects such as Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai and Vanjagar Ulagam attracted considerable online interest. In 2021 he was cast in the Tamil legal drama Jai Bhim, directed by T. J. Gnanavel, where he portrayed public prosecutor Chellapandiyan. Jai Bhim, released on 2 November 2021, drew widespread attention and achieved strong audience and critical response.
Throughout his career Guru has described his approach to character work as rooted in subtle variations rather than overt transformations. He has credited the scripts and directors who gave him significant roles—especially those behind Aaranya Kaandam, Jigarthanda and Joker—for helping shape his trajectory from supporting player to lead actor.
Public profile
Guru Somasundaram works predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam-language films. Physically, he is listed at approximately 167 cm (1.67 m / 5'5") in height and around 60 kg (132 lbs) in weight, with black eyes and black hair. His interests outside acting include cycling, reading, long drives and listening to music. As of 2024 he is unmarried and is reported to be based in his native Tamil Nadu.
Latest updates
In recent years Guru has continued to appear in high-profile projects, including a notable role in Jai Bhim (2021), a film based on a real 1993 legal case. His work since Joker has kept him visible as both a character actor and a leading performer, with several films gaining attention online and from critics.
