Early life and background
Angus Alexander Patrick Atkinson, known as Gus Atkinson, was born on 19 January 1998 in Wandsworth, Chelsea, London. Raised in the Wandsworth area, he attended Bradfield College, where he featured in school cricket across his teenage years. Atkinson’s family includes his father Edward Tom Atkinson, his younger siblings Barnaby and Isobel, and his paternal grandmother Diana. His mother, Caroline Atkinson, died in December 2020.

Career
Atkinson progressed through Surrey’s pathway from under-13 level and onwards, representing the county at several age-group levels before moving into second XI and senior cricket. He made his first-class debut for Surrey on 8 August 2020 in the Bob Willis Trophy and played his Twenty20 and List A debuts for Surrey later that month and the following year respectively. He was part of Surrey’s squad during their 2022 County Championship campaign.

A right-handed lower-order batter and a right-arm fast bowler, Atkinson has also featured in franchise cricket. He has been part of The Hundred winners Southern Brave (2021) and turned out for Oval Invincibles in 2022 and 2023. He played for the Desert Vipers in the International League T20 in 2023 and for Northern Warriors in the Abu Dhabi T10 League in 2022 and 2023. Atkinson was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2024 Indian Premier League season.

Atkinson’s international career began in 2023. He made his T20 international debut on 1 September 2023 against New Zealand at Old Trafford, and his One Day International debut followed on 8 September 2023 against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. On his T20I debut he produced an impressive return of four wickets for 20 runs, the best bowling figures by an England player on T20I debut. He featured in England’s 2023 World Cup campaign, playing three matches and taking four wickets. In October 2023 he was awarded a two-year central contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board covering both red-ball and white-ball formats.

Atkinson’s development has not been without setbacks; he suffered stress fractures in his back across 2017, 2018 and 2019 that interrupted his progress. He has worked with coaches and programs including the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy and other mentors, and has been recognized at Surrey with Most Improved Player awards.
