Early life and backgroundHaradanahalli Deve Gowda Kumaraswamy was born on 16 December 1959 in Haradanahalli in Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district, Karnataka. He is the son of politician H. D. Deve Gowda and Chennamma and grew up in a large family with three brothers and two sisters. Kumaraswamy attended Vijaya College in Bangalore for a pre-university course and later completed a Bachelor of Science at National College Jayanagar in Bengaluru.
Kumaraswamy is identified with the Vokkaliga community and follows Hinduism. He has been based in Bengaluru and lists watching films among his hobbies. Physical descriptions noted in public records list him at about 5'5" (165 cm) with black eyes and black hair.
Career
Kumaraswamy entered electoral politics with the Janata Dal and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kanakapura in 1996. His legislative career includes multiple terms as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly representing constituencies such as Ramanagara and Channapatna, and a term in Parliament as MP for Bangalore Rural.

Between those terms and afterward he held other senior roles in state politics, including Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 31 May 2013 to 22 January 2014, and president of the Karnataka unit of Janata Dal (Secular) from 2014 to 2022.
In Parliament he served on committees such as the Committee on Rural Development and the Committee on Food Management in the Parliament House Complex during 2009. In electoral contests across decades he has both won and lost seats, a pattern that includes victories as MLA in 2004, 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023, as well as both victory and defeats in Lok Sabha contests. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he won the Mandya constituency as a National Democratic Alliance candidate by a margin of 284,620 votes.
Outside politics, Kumaraswamy has produced films in the Kannada film industry; his debut as a producer was the 1999 movie Surya Vamsha.
