Early life and backgroundHamza Ali Abbasi was born on 23 June 1984 in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. He grew up in a Punjabi family; his father is Mazhar Ali Abbasi, a retired Pakistan Army major, and his mother is Begum Nasim Akhtar Chaudhry, a politician associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party. He has a sister, Fazeela Abbasi, who works as a dermatologist.
Educated both in the United States and in Pakistan, Abbasi completed a bachelor’s degree in International Relations at JCC in Kansas City and later did postgraduate studies at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad. Early interests included public speaking—he won an Urdu debate award while at school—and a childhood ambition to become a chef. He also served in the police after passing the Central Superior Services examination, but left that career to pursue acting.

Abbasi began his performance career in theatre. Between 2006 and 2011 he took part in numerous Urdu stage productions, with roles in plays such as Dally in the Dark (2006), Home is Where Your Clothes Are (2007), Phantom of the Opera (2008), Tom, Dick and Harry (2009), Moulin Rouge (2010) and Bombay Dreams (2011). Theatre remained a formative influence on his transition into screen acting.
On screen, he appeared in a 2011 documentary as Tariq and made his film directorial debut with Mudhouse And The Golden Doll in 2011. His television breakthrough came with dramas including Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley (2012) and the widely recognised Pyarey Afzal (2013).
