Early life and background

Hare Ram Pandey was born in 1961 in Deoghar, Jharkhand. He spent his working life rooted in the region and is identified as an Indian national from his hometown. Physically, he is described as having black eyes and grey hair.

Before turning fully to farming and social work, Pandey worked as a compounder at Jawaharlal Medical College in Bhagalpur. He left that position in 1983 for personal reasons and returned to work on the family farm.

Career

Pandey’s formal profession is farming, but over the years he has become better known for his social work on behalf of abandoned and orphaned girls. A turning point came after he rescued an infant girl from the bushes near his village on 9 December 2004. The child was in critical condition when he found her; after intensive care and about three weeks of treatment she recovered. Pandey gave her the name Taapsee and raised her as part of his household.

That act of rescue grew into an ongoing commitment. Pandey and his wife established Narayan Sewa Aashram in their own home to shelter and care for girls who had been abandoned or left in difficult circumstances. The ashram functions as an informal family: the girls list “Hare Ram Pandey” as their father’s name on official identity documents, and members of his immediate family help with daily care and education.

Pandey has described personally covering education and other expenses for the girls housed at the ashram. He has sold ancestral property and borrowed from relatives to meet those costs. His son, daughter-in-law and wife assist with the work; his daughter-in-law Gayatri handles much of the day-to-day responsibility for teaching the girls and helping them learn arts and practical skills. By 2023 the household included girls with a range of needs, including five who were mentally challenged.

Public profile

Pandey’s social work received wider attention after he appeared on the Indian television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati in October 2023. During his appearance and in subsequent interviews, he recounted the story of rescuing the infant in 2004 and explained that the experience motivated him to care for every abandoned girl child he could. After his television appearance, clips of him with the girls and of him speaking about his work circulated online, where he expressed that caring for the children brought him profound personal fulfillment.

Pandey has described his commitment in spiritual and moral terms, saying he considers the service to these girls an important and lasting duty. The outreach to find and bring vulnerable girls into his home reportedly came from tips and reports he received from others; whenever he learned of a girl in distress he would go to help and bring her to the ashram.

In 2023, one of the girls Pandey had rescued in 2004 was attending class 10. The Narayan Sewa Aashram continued to operate out of Pandey’s residence in Deoghar, with family members managing education, care and skill-building activities for the girls. Pandey remained publicly committed to continuing this work for as long as he could.
