Early life and background

Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu was born on 31 March 1989 in Mohali, Punjab. He grew up in a middle-class family and attended Yadavindra Public School in Mohali, where he first picked up squash at around age ten. After turning thirteen he moved with his coach to Chennai to train at the Indian Squash Association, a decision he has described as difficult but necessary for developing his game. The move required adjusting to new language, food and culture, but Sandhu credits his commitment to the sport and the desire to make his parents proud for sustaining him through that transition.

Career

Sandhu turned professional and joined the Professional Squash Association (PSA) in 2005. Early in his career he captured two PSA titles at the Indian Challenger Series in 2009. He endured several near-misses at the Indian National Championships before breaking through to win the national title in 2014, defeating Saurav Ghosal to claim the crown.

On the continental stage, Sandhu has been part of multiple Indian medal-winning teams. He took a team gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and won medals across Asian and South Asian competitions: a singles silver at the 2014 Asian Games, doubles and team medals at South Asian Games events, and a team bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. In 2016 he reached the semifinals of the men’s division at the Asian Team Championships, and he was part of India’s squad for earlier Asian Games as well.

Sandhu’s career-high world ranking came in 2018 when he climbed to No. 47. That year he relocated to England to train under coach Malcolm Willstrop. In July 2017 the PSA recognized him as Player of the Month, reflecting a period of strong results and rising profile on the professional tour.

Injuries interrupted Sandhu’s momentum in early 2019 when a back injury sustained at the CCI International Squash Open in Mumbai sidelined him. He underwent treatment and rehabilitation at performance and physiotherapy centres in Mohali and Chennai, including work on posture and conditioning, before returning to competition later that year at the HCL-SRFI Indian Tour. By March 2020 his world ranking was recorded at 115.

Sandhu continued to compete at a high level and added to his continental achievements in 2023 by winning a gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, sharing the top podium with Dipika Pallikal.

Listed at approximately 1.73 metres (5 feet 8 inches) and around 65 kilograms, Sandhu is known for his dedication to training and his persistence through setbacks.
