Harinder Sikka Biography
Harinder Singh Sikka is an Indian author, retired Navy officer, businessman and film producer best known for his debut novel Calling Sehmat, which inspired
Early life and backgroundHarinder Singh Sikka was born and raised in Delhi, India. He completed his undergraduate studies at Delhi University, graduating in 1979. Soon after finishing college he joined the Indian Navy, where he began a career that would shape his later work as an author and public figure.
Career
Sikka was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 1981 and served until taking premature retirement in 1993 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After leaving the service he moved into the corporate world, joining the Piramal Group in 1994 and working there in various capacities.
Alongside his corporate career, Sikka became active on public-interest issues. Beginning in 1999 he led efforts to combat counterfeit and spurious drugs in India, including filing a public interest litigation aimed at drawing attention to the problem. He also engaged on rural and agricultural concerns: when a series of farmer suicides affected Telangana, Sikka and a television crew travelled to the region to provide assistance to widows and to document conditions. He later launched a project called "Cultivating Hope" to highlight farmers' difficulties; that campaign attracted support from public figures in the arts and civic sector.
As an author, Sikka published his debut novel Calling Sehmat in 2008. The book fictionalises the life of an undercover Indian agent; Sikka has said he chose a fictional name to protect identities and to allow the narrative to be told safely. The book later served as the basis for the 2018 film Raazi.
In the film world Sikka has also worked as a producer. His Punjabi-language production Nanak Shah Fakir was released in 2014 and screened at international film festivals including Cannes, Toronto and Los Angeles. The film received attention and discussion in India, where some regional groups protested aspects of the depiction of the life of Guru Nanak.
Public profile
Sikka's background spans military service, corporate roles and creative work, which has given him a multifaceted public profile. His anti-counterfeiting campaign earned international recognition: he is the second Indian to receive an award from the Global Anti-Counterfeiting Group, Paris for outstanding service in that field. In 2005 he was also presented with the Indira Super Achiever Award.
Personal life
Sikka is married and follows Sikhism. He is a non-vegetarian and counts playing golf, reading, listening to music and watching films among his recreations. He has adopted three children. His hair is described as salt-and-pepper and his eye colour as black. A. R. Rahman is mentioned as a favourite music director.
