Early life and background

Harish Pengan was born M. K. Haresh Kumar Nair and raised in Thuruthissery, Nedumbassery in Ernakulam, Kerala. Sources list his year of birth as either 1974 or 1975. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mahatma Gandhi University, Athirampuzha, Kottayam. He attended Sadhana Mandir High School in Bolarum, Secunderabad during his earlier schooling.

His family included his father Karunakaran Nair, who owned a hotel in Athani, Nedumbassery, and his mother Sharadamma. He had two sisters, including a twin, Sreeja M. Nair, and Sindhu M. K. Sindhu previously served as a member of the Nedumbassery Panchayat. Harish lived at Madavanakudi House in Thuruthissery and followed Hinduism.

Career

Harish began his on-screen career in television. While visiting a shoot for the serial Kayamkulam Kochunni he expressed interest in acting to the serial's writer and was cast in the show as the character Pengan. That role became widely recognized and the screen name Pengan stuck with him.

He later appeared in other television serials, including Pookkaalam, directed by Vinayan J. Kottavattam. A production controller he met while working on that serial helped him gain entry into the Malayalam film industry.

Harish made his film debut in 2011 with a small role in the Malayalam film Note Out, appearing as a shop vendor. Over the next decade he built a steady career playing supporting characters, often portraying villagers and everyday figures. In 2015 he appeared in Kunjiramayanam and his breakthrough came in 2016 with the role of Tomy in Maheshinte Prathikaaram, a film that drew both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Subsequent film work included roles in Honey Bee 2.5 (2017), Mamangam (2019) where he played Velichappadu, and Anugraheethan Antony (2021) as Bento Mash. In 2021 he played Kunjumon in Jan. E. Man. He received praise for his supporting turn as security guard Gopalan in Priyan Ottathilanu (2022) and appeared as Rasheed in Shefeekkinte Santhosham (2022). He also worked outside Malayalam cinema, appearing as a tea shop owner in the Hindi-language web series The Family Man (2019).

His final film role was in Charles Enterprises, which released in theatres on 19 May 2023.

Harish was married to Bindu K. Pillai, a nurse in Dubai; the couple married on 29 October 2018. They had two sons, Rishi, who was studying engineering, and Yadu. Harish maintained a connection to the hospitality business, having worked in his father’s hotel after completing his commerce degree.

Public profile

Harish was known for turning small parts into memorable characters. Colleagues and audiences remembered his performances in films like Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Priyan Ottathilanu. He was described as having black eyes, salt-and-pepper hair, and stood about 167 cm tall. Reports note he occasionally consumed alcoholic beverages.

Illness and death

In early May 2023 Harish was admitted to Amrita Hospital in Edappally, Kochi, with abdominal discomfort. Medical reports indicated his liver was in serious condition and he required a transplant. His twin sister Sreeja volunteered and tested as a compatible donor. Fundraising efforts were organized by colleagues and members of the public after the treatment costs were reported to be substantial.

During his hospital stay his condition deteriorated, with infected intestines that affected his liver and delayed transplant proceedings until the infection could be controlled. Harish Pengan passed away on 30 May 2023 at Amrita Hospital in Edappally, Kochi. His last rites were held on 31 May 2023 at his family home in Thuruthissery, Nedumbassery.

The Chief Minister of Kerala remarked that many of the small but memorable characters Harish played would remain in audiences’ minds.
