Early life and background

Harishankar Parsai was born on 22 August 1924 in Jamani, then part of the Central Provinces and Berar in British India. His father was Jumak Lalu Prasad and his mother was Champa Bai. Both of his parents died when he was young, and responsibility for the household fell on him early in life. He was raised in large part by an aunt and had four siblings whom he supported.

Parsai studied at institutions that included Semester Global School in Allahabad and later attended Nagpur University, where he completed a master's level qualification in Hindi (listed as M.A.T.M.). These formative years preceded a period of public service and ultimately a long career in letters.

Career

Parsai began his professional life in a government position with the forest department, taking that job in 1942 when he was about 18. He soon moved away from government work to focus on writing. His first known involvement in the literary world came through a magazine called Vasudha, which he launched. Although Vasudha attracted attention, it struggled financially and was discontinued.

Parsai established himself as a writer known for satire and humorous prose in Hindi. His work often combined sharp social critique with an accessible, colloquial voice that reached everyday readers. He wrote satirical pieces, essays, and columns that touched on human nature, social attitudes, and public life.

He became a regular presence in newspapers through columns such as “Poochhiye Parsai Se,” in which he answered readers’ questions on topics ranging from entertainment and love to films and social and political issues. He also contributed pieces identified by titles including Nai Duniya Mein Suno Bhai Sadho and Nayi Kahani in the Hindi daily Deshbandhu.

Parsai’s writing achieved recognition within the Hindi literary establishment. In 1982 he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his satirical work Viklaang Shraddha Ka Daur. He also received the Sharad Joshi Award in 1992. His essays and sketches, including notable pieces such as Premchand Ke Phate Joote and “A Sorted Man,” are remembered for their combination of wit and moral observation.

Public profile

Parsai’s style was described as revolutionary in its approach to Hindi satire, and his work has been taught and referenced in broader educational contexts; some of his writings were included in Hindi textbooks produced by NCERT. His writings often drew on familiar images and cultural touchstones to make satirical points — for example, composing a piece based on a picture of Munshi Premchand in torn shoes.

Several of his stories and essays were later adapted for television. In the early 2000s a series titled Parsai Kehate Hain brought episodes based on his work to viewers on DD National, introducing his satire to a new generation.

Personal life

Parsai remained unmarried. His life story, including hardships after the early loss of his parents and the experience of caring for his siblings, features in an autobiographical account titled Gardish. He lived and worked primarily in central India and passed away on 10 August 1995 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He was 71 at the time of his death, which was from natural causes.
