Maramreddy Harishankar Reddy was born on 2 June 1998 in Nagurivandla Palli village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. He grew up in the nearby hometown of Chinnamandem and attended Swetha High School there. His father, Ramachandra Reddy, worked as a farmer and his mother is Lakshmi Devi. Harishankar has one brother.

He began playing hardball cricket comparatively late, taking up the game around age 14 after attending a district under-14 selection trial in 2012. Limited cricket infrastructure in his village prompted a move in 2016 to Vizianagaram, where he enrolled at the ACA Academy Ground to develop his bowling.
