Harivansh Narayan Singh was born on 30 June 1956 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a region that lies on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and is associated with Sitab Diara village. Educated at J P Inter College and later at Banaras Hindu University, he completed postgraduate studies in economics and a postgraduate diploma in journalism.

Harivansh began his professional life in journalism. Early assignments included a traineeship at the Times of India in 1977, followed by work at Dharmyug magazine. He spent parts of the 1980s working in both banking and print journalism, including a stint at Bank of India from 1981 to 1984 and a role as assistant editor for the Ravivar magazine of Amrit Bazar Patrika until 1989.

In 1990 he served as an additional media advisor when Chandra Shekhar became Prime Minister. He later became associated with the Hindi daily Prabhat Khabar, serving as its editor for more than 25 years and overseeing the launch of editions in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
