Early life and background

Harjinder Kaur was born on 14 October 1996 in Mehas Village, Patiala, Punjab. Raised in a family where her father, Sahib Singh, worked as a farmer, she attended Government Girls Secondary School in Nabha and later studied at SGTB Khalsa College, Anandpur Sahib. From a young age she enjoyed sports and played kabaddi during her school and college days.

Her entry into strength sports grew out of those early team activities. While at college she was encouraged by a coach, Surinder Singh, to play kabaddi for the college team. Later, during training and competitions at Punjabi University in Patiala, Paramjeet Sharma — himself a Commonwealth weightlifting champion in 1990 — noticed her natural power during tug-of-war and recommended she try weightlifting. Harjinder began focused weightlifting training under Sharma’s guidance in 2016.

Career

Harjinder competes in the women’s 71 kg weight class. Over several national competitions she established herself with multiple podium finishes. At inter-state and national events she earned medals including gold at the 3rd Women Inter-State Senior National Weightlifting Competition and top finishes at senior national championships. In 2021 she won a Best Lifter trophy at the senior national championships held at NIS Patiala, and she also secured victory in the senior nationals in Orissa in the women’s 71 kg category.

Her most prominent international achievement to date is winning the bronze medal in the women’s 71 kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Following that performance she expressed satisfaction at winning a medal while noting that she was not fully happy with her own lifts and intended to focus next on the Asian Championships.
