Early life and background

Harleen Kaur Deol was born on 21 June 1998 in Chandigarh and grew up in Patiala, Punjab. She attended Yadvindra Public School in Mohali and later studied at MCM DAV College in Chandigarh. Her family includes her father, Baghel Singh Deol, who worked in business, her mother Charanjit Kaur Deol, who was employed in government service, and a brother, Manjot Singh Deol, who is a doctor. Harleen began playing informal cricket in the streets as a child alongside her brother and neighborhood boys, and she received strong support from her mother as she pursued the sport.

She moved to Himachal Pradesh as a teenager when her father was posted in Dharamshala, and at 13 she joined a girls' cricket academy there. Harleen was academically successful in school, scoring above eighty percent in both tenth and twelfth grade. From an early age she also played other sports such as football, hockey and basketball.

Career

Harleen is a right-handed batter and an occasional right-arm leg-spin bowler who represents India across the shorter formats. She made her One Day International debut on 22 February 2019 and her T20 International debut on 4 March 2019, both against England. She has not played Test cricket for India.

Domestically Harleen has played for Himachal Pradesh and has represented India A, India Red, India C and the Trailblazers. She wears jersey number 98 when playing for India. Her coach and mentor at the academy level was Pawan Sen, who encouraged her development as a fielder and a batter.

Harleen’s transition from a lower-order batter to an opening role came after a breakthrough innings in a match against Hyderabad, where she helped recover the team from an early collapse. That performance convinced her coaches to promote her up the order and she responded with substantial contributions soon after. She also filled a role as a leg-spinner when teams required that variation.

Her fielding ability attracted widespread attention in July 2021 when she produced a remarkable boundary-saving catch against England, leaping across the rope and diving forward. Her athleticism and dedication to fitness have been noted by her coaches; academy staff recall that she worked on overcoming a fear of sliding and diving and maintained strong conditioning scores in fitness tests.

Public profile

Harleen first gained broader recognition during the Women’s T20 Challenge, where she was part of a 119-run partnership with Smriti Mandhana for the Trailblazers. She is the second woman cricketer from Chandigarh to represent India, after Taniya Bhatia, and the second from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association system to play for the national side, following Sushma Verma.

She cites MS Dhoni, Shane Warne and Suresh Raina among her cricketing influences, and counts Ranveer Singh as a favorite actor. Off the field she enjoys watching movies and dancing, and follows a non-vegetarian diet. Harleen has described receiving her India debut cap as one of the most meaningful moments of her career and has expressed the ambition of winning a World Cup for her country.
