Early life and background

Harmeet Singh Gulzar was born on 25 August 1980 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Raised in a family where his mother listened to classic Hindi songs, he and his elder brother Manmeet developed an interest in music at a young age. The brothers participated in an inter-school kirtan competition when Harmeet was in first grade, and while still in school they composed a song titled ‘Jogi Singh Barnala Singh,’ which later gained popularity.

Harmeet attended The Scindia School in Gwalior and later studied at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. Early on he worked at an FM radio station in Gwalior, and the legendary singer Mahendra Kapoor encouraged the brothers to pursue a career in the Hindi music industry.

Career

Harmeet began his professional life in the entertainment industry as an actor on television. His acting debut came with a role in the soap Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki in 2000, and he also appeared in other serials such as Kkusum (2001) and Kyun Hota Hai Pyarrr (2002). Parallel to acting, Harmeet explored music: he released an album titled Boond in 2002 and later worked as a film music director on Isi Life Mein (2010).

Together with his brother Manmeet, Harmeet forms the music director duo Meet Bros. The pair initially gained wider attention after the success of their early single ‘Jogi Singh Barnala Singh’ and subsequently shifted focus to singing and music production. In 2010 they expanded the unit into a trio called Meet Bros Anjjan with Anjjan Bhattacharya; that collaboration continued until 2015 when Anjjan departed by mutual consent.

Meet Bros have been associated with several high-profile Bollywood songs. Among their notable tracks are Baby Doll from Ragini MMS 2 (2014), Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan from Roy (2015), High Heels from Ki & Ka (2016), and Dil Ka Telephone from Dream Girl (2019). For their work on the film Roy (2015) they received recognition at major award ceremonies in 2016, winning Best Music Director at both the Filmfare Awards and the International Indian Film Academy Awards. In 2018 they were honoured in the Best Live Performers category at the Dadasaheb Phalke Awards.

Public profile

Harmeet stands about 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) and is described as having black eyes and black hair. He is known to enjoy reading, dancing, and travelling, and he follows a non-vegetarian diet. A guitar tattoo on his arm reflects his musical identity.

His public life has included personal developments that received media attention. Harmeet has been married twice: first in 2005 and again in 2010. His first marriage was to model Shefali Jariwala; that marriage later ended in divorce. He later married Sunaina Singh. He has a son. Harmeet’s mother is named Nirupam Kaur, and his brother Manmeet is also a singer, music director and actor and the other half of the Meet Bros duo.

Some controversies connected to Meet Bros have been reported in the public domain. One involved allegations that Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan drew from a Baloch song. Media reports have also recorded an incident in which Shefali Jariwala—his former spouse—filed an FIR alleging assault and abuse; public comments from Harmeet at the time indicated he believed matters to be legally resolved between them.

Latest updates

As of 2024, Harmeet is 44 years old and continues to be active as a singer and music director, with a catalog of popular Bollywood songs and live performances that have earned industry recognition. He and his brother maintain their profile in the Hindi music scene and have cited singer Kanika Kapoor as an important collaborator and a close acquaintance.
