Early life and background

Harsh Mayar was born on 22 March 1998 and grew up in Dakshinpuri, New Delhi. He attended Yogi Arvind Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Delhi and developed an interest in performance at a young age. Encouraged by his maternal uncle, Harsh took part in a theatre workshop at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra between 2005 and 2008 and regularly performed in plays staged at the Shri Ram Centre in Mandi House during his childhood.

His family includes his father, Ashok Mayar, who runs a tent rental business, his mother Reeta Mayar, and a brother, Chandan Mayar, who works as a makeup artist. Harsh remains unmarried and is publicly known to be in a relationship with Sukanya Rajan.

Career

Harsh Mayar’s screen career began after several years in theatre. He initially auditioned for Chillar Party but was not selected. He then won the role of Chhotu (also called Kalam) in the children’s film I Am Kalam (2010/2011), a performance that brought him national attention and a string of awards. That role also led to a meeting with former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who presented him with an autograph copy of his book Wings of Fire following the film’s release.

Following I Am Kalam, Harsh continued to work across film, television and digital platforms. He appeared as Ajite in the children’s film Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid (2012) and played Nanu in the Indo-American film Desires of the Heart (2013). His film credits also include Chaarfutiya Chhokare (2014), Nine Hours in Mumbai (2018), Hichki (2018) in which he played a slum boy named Aatish, and The Tenant (2021).

On television and streaming platforms, Harsh’s work spans episodic and series roles. He was seen in an episode of Gumrah: End of Innocence (2014) and in Doordarshan’s action-drama AdhaFULL (2016) as Adrak. In 2019 he joined the Hotstar Special anthology Kanpuriye and appeared in TVF’s short Padh Le Basanti. He played Sujay in the web series Abhay (2019) and took a lead role as Aman Mishra in the streaming series Gullak from 2019 to 2022; that performance earned him a nomination for Best Actor – Popular at the ITA Awards 2019. He also appeared in the mini-series Overtime (2020) as Manoj Bhardwaj and in the 2015 short film Untitled: The Words Left Unsaid.

Theatre remained part of his background as well: he received praise for playing Annant in the stage production Paighamber, where he shared the stage with veteran actors including Tom Alter and Amit Behl.

Harsh’s breakthrough role in I Am Kalam brought multiple honours. He won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist in 2010 and received recognition at several international festivals, including Best Actor at the Minsk International Film Festival (Listapad) and a River Rock Award for Best Actor at the Silent River Film Festival in California. He also received a Special Mention at the International Children’s Film Festival India in Hyderabad and later earned a Certificate of Excellence at the 7th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival in 2017 for the short film Porphessnal. In 2018 he was a recipient of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nobel Awards presented by the International Human Rights Council.
