Harsha Jingade, commonly referred to as Harsha, was born on 21 May and grew up in Shimoga (also spelled Shivamogga) in the Indian state of Karnataka. He belonged to a Hindu family; his parents are Nagaraj Jingade, a tailor, and Padma Jingade. Harsha had two sisters, one of whom is named Ashwini Jingade. He remained unmarried.

Physically, Harsha stood around 175 cm (approximately 5'9") and had black hair and black eyes. He had a tattoo on the right side of his neck reading "Mental." Those who knew him described him as devoted to the Hindu deity Ram.

Career

Harsha was active in right-leaning, Hindu nationalist circles in Karnataka. He worked as an activist and held the role of Prakanda Sahakaryadarshi (coordinator) in the Shivamogga district. He was associated with the Bajrang Dal, a Hindu nationalist organization, and was known locally for his participation in its activities.

Death and aftermath

On 20 February 2022, Harsha was stabbed to death in Bharathi Nagar in the Shivamogga district. He was 23 years old at the time of his death. His killing occurred amid heightened communal tensions in Karnataka that had been building earlier in 2022 around protests linked to the hijab issue in educational institutions.

Following the murder, police arrested six people named Mohammed Kashif, Sayed Nadeem, Afsifullah Khan, Rehan Sharef, Nihan, and Abdul Afnan.
