Early life and background

Harshal Vikram Patel was born on 23 November 1990 in Sanand, Gujarat, and grew up in Ahmedabad. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at H. A. College of Commerce in Ahmedabad. From a young age he trained under coach Tarak Trivedi; his mother enrolled him in a cricket academy to keep him off street cricket and give him structured coaching. His family emigrated to the United States in 2008 but Harshal stayed in India to pursue his cricket career, with his coach and brother supporting that decision.

Career

Patel began making a mark in junior and domestic competitions. He played under-19 cricket for India and was named in the India Under-19 squad for the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He made his List A debut for Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2009 and later moved to Haryana in search of more playing opportunities. He featured in the Ranji Trophy from the 2011–12 season and delivered notable performances in knockout matches, which helped raise his profile.

In the Indian Premier League, Patel was first bought by Mumbai Indians for the 2010 season, though he did not appear in the playing eleven. After strong domestic showings, Royal Challengers Bangalore selected him following his Ranji performances. On the international front, Patel made his Twenty20 International debut for India on 19 November 2021 against New Zealand at the JSCA International Stadium Complex. He took two wickets in that debut and was named player of the match. He was added to India’s squad as a net bowler for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in October 2021 and was later included in T20I squads such as the series against Ireland in June 2022.

A right-arm medium-pace bowler and a right-handed lower-order batter, Patel is particularly noted for his slower deliveries and offcutter variations. He has said Zaheer Khan was an inspiration for adopting slower, deceptive deliveries, and he is regarded as one of the more accurate practitioners of slower balls in contemporary white-ball cricket.
