Early life and background

Hashmatullah Shahidi was born on 4 November 1994 in Logar, Afghanistan. Raised in a family that encouraged his early interest in the game, he began playing organized cricket as a child and progressed through Afghanistan’s youth pathway, representing the country at Under-17 and Under-19 levels and appearing at the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Physical presence and playing style

Shahidi is a left-handed batter who bowls occasional right-arm off-break. Listed at about 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) and roughly 70 kg, he is known for an elegant cover drive and a technique suited to the longer formats of the game. Test cricket is noted among his preferred formats, and he models aspects of his batting on established international players he admires.

Career

Shahidi made his T20 international debut on 30 September 2013 against Kenya and played his first ODI on 2 October 2013, also versus Kenya. He earned his Test debut on 14 June 2018 in a match against India. Over the following years he established himself as a mainstay of Afghanistan’s top order across formats.

He has represented numerous domestic and franchise sides in Afghanistan and abroad, including Band-e-Amir Region, Speen Ghar Region, Amo Region, Kabul teams, Maiwand Defenders, Boost Defenders, MIS Ainak Knights, Kabul Eagles, Nangarhar Leopards, Far West United, and others. From the 2017–18 first-class season onward he featured regularly for Band-e-Amir Region, and he has appeared in multiple editions of Afghanistan’s domestic T20 competitions and in the Nepal T20 League.

Shahidi has produced landmark innings for his country. In March 2021 he became the first Afghan batsman to score a Test double century when he finished 200 not out against Zimbabwe. Earlier milestones include his first Test fifty in March 2019 and his first ODI half-century, a score of 72 against Bangladesh in September 2016. In January 2020 he combined with Rahmat Shah to put on 184 runs for the third wicket in an ODI versus Ireland, a partnership that stood as Afghanistan’s highest third-wicket stand in ODIs.

Leadership

In June 2021 Shahidi was named captain of Afghanistan’s Test and ODI sides. Since then he has led the national team in major tournaments including the 2022 and 2023 Asia Cups and the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. As captain he has been a prominent figure in Afghanistan cricket during a period of growing international exposure.

Public profile

Off the field Shahidi has been visible in charitable and promotional activities. In November 2022 he was appointed as a brand ambassador for Etisalat Afghanistan. He has participated in social campaigns and made donations to victims of attacks. Known to enjoy hiking and wildlife, he is often photographed visiting animal parks and has expressed a fondness for fish as one of his favorite foods.
