Rouhani’s political career dates to the early years of the Islamic Republic. He was first elected to Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) in 1980 and served five consecutive terms through 2000. During his time in the legislature he held leadership roles including deputy speaker and chairmanship responsibilities on defense and foreign policy committees.
Following the Iran–Iraq war, Rouhani moved into national security and foreign policy roles. From 1989 to 2005 he served as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and held the position of National Security Adviser to the president for separate periods. He was also Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator between 2003 and 2005.
