Early life and background

Hayley Kristen Matthews was born on 19 March 1998 in Bridgetown, Barbados. She grew up in a sporting family; her father, Mike Matthews, played club cricket. Matthews attended People’s Cathedral Primary School and Harrison College, and began playing cricket from a very young age, picking up a bat at around seven. She progressed quickly through local ranks, representing Barbados age-group sides by nine and the Barbados senior team by age 12.

Career

Matthews is best known as a right-handed batter and right-arm off-spinner who represents the West Indies at international level. She made her T20 international debut on 27 September 2014 against New Zealand in Kingston, and her ODI debut on 11 November 2014 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Her international career includes notable high points with both bat and ball. She produced a match-winning 66 off 45 balls in the final of the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup against Australia and was named Player of the Match as West Indies won the title. Matthews has recorded multiple ODI centuries, including scores of 117 against South Africa in September 2018, 100 not out against Pakistan in July 2021, and 119 against New Zealand in the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup — her highest ODI score to date. In T20 internationals she has also reached triple figures, making 107 off 62 balls against Ireland in Dublin on 29 May 2019, and set a West Indies women’s T20I record with an individual score of 132 in 2022.
