Hema Sharma was born and brought up in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. She comes from a middle-class family with two brothers and one sister. Her father worked as a mechanic in a government bus department and her mother is a homemaker. Financial difficulties in the family affected her education; she enrolled for a Bachelor’s in Arts at Tejpal Singh Tyagi Kushal Pal Singh Tyagi Memorial Degree College in Uttar Pradesh but was forced to interrupt her studies when her father’s health and the family finances declined.

From a young age Sharma trained in classical dance. She studied Kathak for six years, completed a six-month diploma in Kathak and is also trained in Bharatnatyam. While still at school she taught Kathak after classes and earned money from those lessons.

Before entering the entertainment industry she worked as a receptionist at Narayan Hospital (now Jagat Hospital) in Meerut, earning a modest salary. She later moved to Delhi to pursue choreography, and then to Mumbai in 2008 when her plans shifted toward performing on screen.
