Hemangi Kavi was born on 26 August 1980 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a middle-class family, she completed her schooling at Sahkar Vidya Prasarak Mandal Secondary School in Mumbai and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir J J School of Art, graduating in 2003. Art and painting were interests from an early age; her first remembered painting was of Lord Ganesha.

After finishing college she learned web design and worked briefly as a web designer in a private firm in Mumbai before leaving that role to pursue the performing arts.
