Early life and background

Hemant Kher was born on 17 December 1977 in Kosamba, Gujarat. Raised in a family with roots in farming, he grew up in an environment where theatre and films captured his imagination from an early age. As a child he entertained his classmates with mimicry and staged his first performance in third standard, playing the role of Shravan Kumar in a school function. He attended Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and went on to study at The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where he completed a BSc in Chemistry. After graduation he pursued formal training in theatre at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, earning a postgraduate diploma in dramatics.

Career

Following his education at the National School of Drama, Hemant moved to Mumbai to pursue work in film and television. His on-screen acting debut came with the film Kya Tum Ho (2006). Alongside acting, he built a parallel career as a writer and creative professional, beginning with writing work on the reality television show Shabaash India in 2006. Over the years he contributed as a writer to reality and performance shows including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs, Just Dance, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Dil Deke Dekho. He has also served as a senior creative director at RedDot Productions.

An accident in 2008 temporarily curtailed Hemant’s efforts to focus solely on acting; during his recovery he returned to writing and behind-the-scenes roles.
