Early life and backgroundHemant Mahaur was born on 18 August 1976 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Raised in a family where Sunday outings often included going to the cinema, he developed an early interest in Hindi films that helped shape his decision to pursue a career in acting.
Mahaur completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and undertook further studies that included a post-graduate diploma in dramatic arts from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi and an acting diploma from the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts. He also spent time studying law but did not complete the degree. During his formative years at NSD he trained under established theatre practitioners and worked with experienced teachers and directors, which influenced his foundation in stagecraft.
Career
Mahaur's professional screen career began with his appearance in the 1999 film Shool. Over the years he has taken on acting work across mainstream cinema, independent films and short projects, and has added directing, writing and producing to his résumé.
On stage, he was active in theatrical festivals and productions between 1989 and 1994, taking part in events such as the IPTA and Nandikar festivals and performing in plays including Dragon. His screen work includes supporting roles in several notable Hindi films: he portrayed Suresh Krishnan in Agent Vinod (2012), appeared in Highway (2014) and had a role in Phantom (2015). He also had a part in The Warrior (2001), a film that received international recognition, and appeared in the National Award-winning Swaraj: The Little Republic (2003).
Mahaur expanded into voice work, dubbing the character of Duryodhana in the animated feature Arjun: The Warrior Prince (2012). He has taken lead and significant roles in shorter-format projects as well, such as the lead in the New York Film Academy short Sadak Chhaap and performance work in the Punjabi short Kabhu na Chhaade Khet (2020).
In addition to acting, Mahaur has written for and created short films. He wrote dialogues for the feature Chilam and contributed story, screenplay and dialogues to short films including THE KITE (2011) and Mayanagari. As a filmmaker, he directed and produced short films such as The Kite (2019) and DWAND (2019) under his production banner Daya Pictures; The Kite received festival recognition.
On the digital front, Mahaur appeared in web content in 2022, including the role of Daku Somwar Singh in the SonyLIV series Dr. Arora and a part in The Great Indian Murder, a series produced by Ajay Devgn Films and released on Disney+ Hotstar.
