Early life and background

Hemant Soren was born on 10 August 1975 in Nemra in what was then Ramgarh District, Bihar (now part of Jharkhand). He grew up in the region that would later become his political base and is identified with Ranchi as his hometown. Soren completed schooling up to the 12th standard and attended Patna High School. He later enrolled at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, but left before completing a degree. He belongs to a Scheduled Tribe community and follows Hinduism.

His family has long been involved in politics. He is the son of Shibu Soren, a veteran leader who served as a Union cabinet minister and as chief minister of Jharkhand. Hemant has two brothers and a sister; his elder brother Durga Soren died in 2009. Hemant is married to Kalpana Soren and they have two sons.

Career

Soren entered electoral politics in the mid-2000s. He contested the 2005 Jharkhand Assembly elections but lost to Stephen Marandi. In 2009 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and soon after was elevated within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, being named working president of the party that year. He resigned his Rajya Sabha seat in January 2010 after winning a seat as a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from the Dumka constituency.

Within a year he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand. In July 2013, at the age of 38, Hemant Soren became the fifth chief minister of the state, a milestone that made him one of the youngest to hold the office. After the 2014 assembly election, when the BJP gained a majority, Soren served as Leader of the Opposition beginning in January 2015.

Soren continued to contest and win assembly seats: he was elected from Barhait in December 2014 and again from the same seat in December 2019. On 29 December 2019 he was sworn in as chief minister, serving as the 11th person to hold that office for Jharkhand. His party work included building alliances; in January 2019 he took part in forming a grand alliance in the state that brought together regional and national parties to contest the 2019 elections.
