Early life and background
Hima Das was born on 9 January 2000 in Kandhulimari Village, Dhing, in the Nagaon district of Assam. Raised in a farming household, her parents Ronjit and Jonali supported her sporting interest from an early age. She attended Dhing Public High School and completed her 12th-grade examinations under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in May 2019.

As a child Hima enjoyed playing football and often played with boys at school. A school physical education teacher encouraged her to try sprinting, and her potential was noticed at an inter-district meet by coach Nippon Das. That identification led to training opportunities in Guwahati, where she worked under coaches including Nippon Das and Nabajit Malakar and transitioned from the 100 and 200 metres to the 400 metres.

Career
Hima made her international breakthrough in 2018. That year she won gold in the 400 metres at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, becoming India’s first track-and-field athlete to claim a world title at that level. Her performances across 2018 also included medals at major multi-sport events: a silver in the individual 400 metres and golds in the mixed and women’s 4×400 metre relays at the Asian Games in Jakarta.

After her world-junior success, Hima continued to compete on the global circuit. She placed sixth in the women’s 400-metre final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. In July 2019 she enjoyed a particularly successful month in Europe, winning multiple 200-metre and 400-metre races at meets in Poland and the Czech Republic, including events in Poznan, Kutno, Kladno, Tabor and Nove Mesto.

Nationally, Hima set new benchmarks in the 400 metres during 2018, first recording a national mark of 51.00 in an Asian Games heat and then improving the national record to 50.79 seconds on 26 August 2018.

Honours and appointments
Recognition followed quickly after her international victories. In September 2018 she was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Government of India. In November 2018 UNICEF-India appointed her as the organisation’s first youth ambassador from the country. The Government of Assam named her a sports brand ambassador for the state, and she has also served as a brand ambassador for Assam Fire and Emergency Services as well as for Adidas.

In February 2021 the Assam government appointed Hima to the rank of Deputy Superintendent (DSP) in Assam Police, with the statement that she would concentrate on her sporting career for the time being and consider joining the service after retiring from athletics.

Hima is popularly known by nicknames such as Dhing Express, Mon Jai and Golden Girl. Her public image grew rapidly following international success; prominent leaders congratulated her after the World U20 title, and she was featured on the cover of GQ India as a Young Indian of the Year in October 2018.
