Early life and background

Hima Kohli was born on 2 September 1959 in New Delhi. She grew up in a family with roots in pre-partition India; her father came from Jalandhar and her mother from Gujranwala. Kohli attended St. Thomas' Girls Senior Secondary School in Mandir Marg, New Delhi, and went on to study at St. Stephen's College, where she completed a B.A. (Hons.) in history and later a postgraduate degree in the subject. She then read law at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1984.

Career

Kohli built a diverse practice in Delhi, acting for public bodies and private clients. Between 1999 and 2004 she served as standing counsel and legal advisor to the New Delhi Municipal Council. In December 2004 she was appointed additional standing counsel (Civil) for the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi and represented the government in several public interest litigations. She also advised bodies such as the Public Grievances Commission, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and national cooperative organisations, and provided legal aid work through the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee.

On 29 May 2006 Kohli joined the Delhi High Court as an additional judge; she became a permanent judge on 29 August 2007 and served on that court until 6 January 2021. During her time on the bench she was involved in decisions touching on juvenile identity protections, the rights of detainees, accommodations for students with disabilities, and the reappointment of officials where disciplinary action was found unsustainable. She took on a number of administrative and service roles while at the Delhi High Court, including chairing committees and working on legal services initiatives.

In January 2021 Kohli was elevated to Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, becoming the first woman to hold that office. Her tenure there ran from 7 January 2021 to 30 August 2021.

On 26 August 2021 she was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India and took her oath on 31 August 2021, one of several justices sworn in that day.

Another bench emphasized protections for juveniles by holding that a juvenile’s identity should not be disclosed at any stage. She also directed Delhi University to provide scribes for visually impaired students taking online examinations.
