Early life and background

Hiroshi Suzuki was born on 5 June 1961 in Kyoto City and spent his childhood in Uji City in Kyoto Prefecture. He completed his schooling in Kyoto and took part in an American Field Service student exchange program during his second year of senior high school, spending a year in Milwaukee. That overseas experience influenced his decision to pursue a career in diplomacy.

Suzuki earned a B.A. from the University of Tokyo in 1985 and later completed an M.A. at The Fletcher School at Tufts University in 1988. He lists singing, travelling, reading and sports such as golf, tennis and skiing among his hobbies.

Career

Suzuki joined Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 1985 and has built a multi-decade career across a wide range of bilateral and multilateral posts. He took on domestic responsibilities in the mid-2000s, working as executive secretary to chief cabinet secretaries and serving as spokesperson for international press for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He became director of the International Press Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in January 2008 and later served as minister at Japan’s embassies in both the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.

From December 2012 through 2020 Suzuki worked as Executive Secretary to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In July 2020 he was appointed Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, a role that included serving as Japan’s G7 and G20 Sherpa. In August 2022 he acted as an advisor to the Special Secretariat for the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

In September 2022 Suzuki was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to India and the Kingdom of Bhutan, reflecting his long career of diplomatic postings and senior policy roles.
