Homi Adajania Biography

Homi Adajania is an Indian film director, writer and producer from Mumbai. He made his feature directorial debut with the English-language film Being Cyrus

Early life and background

Homi Adajania was born in Mumbai in 1972 and raised in a Parsi family. He attended St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. His father, Aspy Adajania, served in the Indian Army and later held the post of president of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation; Aspy died in 1994. Homi has one sister, Zia Diwan Adajania, who passed away in 2014. He is married to fashion stylist and columnist Anaita Shroff Adajania; the couple married in 2002 and have two sons, Zane and Zreh.

After his father's death, Homi took over the family petrol pump in a challenging neighborhood of Mumbai. The experience had a strong effect on him and prompted a long period of travel. During roughly a decade of travel he supported himself with a variety of odd jobs. He later worked as a freelance writer before entering filmmaking.

Career

Adajania began his film career behind the camera and made his feature directorial debut with the English-language film Being Cyrus (2005). That film won the Silver Hanoman Award at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival in 2006. Being Cyrus was filmed at his bungalow in Panchgani, which he later sold.

He moved into Hindi cinema and helmed the widely noted romantic comedy Cocktail (2012). He followed that with Finding Fanny (2014), which he directed and for which he also wrote the screenplay. In 2015 he directed and produced a short film titled My Choice, made as part of a Vogue campaign on women’s empowerment and featuring Deepika Padukone alongside a large ensemble of women.

Adajania expanded his work as a producer when he produced Raabta (2017). He also contributed the story for The Fakir of Venice (2019). In 2020 he directed Angrezi Medium, the follow-up to the earlier Hindi Medium. In 2023 he created and directed the television series Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo for Disney+ Hotstar.
